HU Skin of Color Research Institute Brings World Leaders in Dermatology to Symposium

To Focus on Diseases Affecting Patients with Skin of Color

Hampton, Va. – The Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) is partnering with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to present its inaugural research symposium, “From Benchtop to Bedside,” Friday, April 30-Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Colonial Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center.

The 2010 research symposium, made possible in part by a grant from the L’Oreal Institute for Ethnic Hair and Skin Research, will feature world-class speakers from five continents and focus on diseases affecting patients with skin of color such as hyperpigmentation, melanoma and alopecia, among others. Attendees will learn about the latest research, treatments and newest tools in pigment cell biology and cutaneous disorders from leaders in the dermatology field.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, certain skin problems are more common among people with darker skin tones. A wide range of racial and ethnic groups, including African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos, and Native Americans, constitute people who have skin of color.

Hampton University is again on the cutting edge of research that has world-wide implications,” said Dr. William R. Harvey, president, HU. “Participants and presenters from all over the world will clearly add to the body of knowledge relative to problems, issues, challenges and diseases involving people of color.”

The deadline to submit abstracts for poster presentations is March 31. CME credits are available for this event.

Participating speakers are from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, University of California-Irvine, Harvard University Medical School, Wake Forest University and the University of Colorado, to name a few.
